Freight
SPT has made it a priority to engage with our key stakeholders in the freight industry, to understand their views on how to improve freight distribution in the region.
Freight Information
The Strathclyde Freight Quality Partnership (FQP) has been established. This body comprises local authorities, the Freight Transport Association, Road Haulage Association, retailers and freight operators.
Freight transport is the underlying delivery mechanism that allows us all to enjoy life's essentials. It is not only important to our way of life but is vital to the increasing prosperity of the region.
Freight is moved in a variety of ways - road, rail, air and sea. However, since the majority of our goods are moved wholly within our region, the main freight mode is road-based. This, coupled with ever increasing personal car travel, is having an adverse impact on the area, particularly through congestion which is causing disruption to business in lost productivity and further damage to the environment due to increasing levels of carbon emissions.
As well as contributing to the development of a Freight Action Plan, the FQP is the body responsible for implementing the main elements of the Action Plan. Main actions include: encouraging more freight on to more sustainable transport modes such as rail and water; improving current transport infrastructure; and improving access to local, regional and global markets.
