Barr set to build largest Park & Ride in Scotland
March 1, 2010 15:00 UKNewsStrathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has appointed Barr Holdings Ltd to construct a new 705-space Park and Ride facility at Croy railway station.
The award of the contract, worth £1,850,523, will see work begin in April this year. Once completed, the facility at Croy will be the largest rail-based Park and Ride in Scotland.
The appointment of a preferred contractor was agreed at a meeting of SPT's Partnership on 26 February 2010. It followed a tendering process which saw seven firms submit bids for the work.
Work on the car park will be carried out in two separate stages to ensure that no parking spaces are lost during the construction phase.
The Park and Ride is expected to be open by the end of this year.
SPT Vice Chair David Fagan welcomed the appointment of the contractor.
He said: "I know from speaking to villagers at a public consultation event we ran in Croy that they feel the current parking arrangements at this station are well below standard.
"SPT and NLC have worked in close partnership over the past few months to get the project to this stage and I'm delighted that we're in a position now to appoint a contractor. Locals will finally see work will begin in a few weeks time.
"Croy is an important station on the rail network and the demand for rail services going east and west, has never been stronger. This new car park will not only alleviate parking issues at the current station but also accommodate future demand."
