SPT moves to sustain concessionary travel on bus, Subway and ferry.
Future of concessionary travel scheme secured
March 4, 2010 13:00 UKNewsSPT has moved to secure the long term future of the Strathclyde Concessionary Travel scheme.
From April 1, those eligible will pay a maximum £1 fare across all Subway, rail and ferry services.
Fares have been amended following a review of the scheme, sustaining it for future years.
The review was carried out due to an increasing demand for the scheme against a limited budget.
As a result, fares on rail, Subway and ferry will all be brought into line. Single fares will rise from 40p to 60p, while a return will change from 80p to £1. Ferry services will no longer be free of charge.
Bruce Kiloh, SPT's Director of Policy, said: "We want to secure the long term stability of the concession scheme within tight financial settlements. If we do nothing the cost of operating the scheme will continue to rise to well over £5 million, which is unsustainable.
"By increasing the concessionary fare, we will continue to sustain the great benefits of the scheme and guarantee its long term future."
