Subway system closed as Fire service investigated reports of chemical fumes
Glasgows subway system was closed down by officers of Strathclyde Fire Service as a precautionary measure at around noon today after reports of fumes in the system. Normal service was restored at around one thirty this afternoon.
Strathclyde Fire Brigade officer Gerry Rooney said, "We requested that the subway stations at West Street and Shields Road be closed so that we could investigate reports of fumes in the stations. This was done as a precautionary measure to allow a prompt investigation."
Earlier today two staff of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport reported feeling unwell and smelling fumes in the station area at West Street. When the Fire service arrived they requested that the stations at West and Shields Road be closed and the subway system powered down and both services suspended.
Its thought that the reports of fumes or chemical leaks may have been related to demolition works in the area involving whats believed to be a former chemical factory. But as yet this is unconfirmed.
At first Subway trains were run through the system to create air movement so that any fumes present could be dispersed. Fire officers then gave the all clear and the service was restored on both circles shortly after half past one.
All the emergency services were in attendance at West Street including, British Transport Police, Strathclyde Police, and the ambulance services and fire services.
