Police Subway presence hailed

BTP officer on Subway networkSPT's head of security has highlighted the positive effects of new policing measures on the Glasgow Subway.

With British Transport Police (BTP) now patrolling the network on a permanent basis, Donnie MacLeod said security has been greatly enhanced.

The officers have been maintaining a constant presence on the network as part of the force's Neighbourhood Policing initiative.

The overall safety and security of passengers is the overriding priority, with BTP officers ensuring a particular focus on combating offences of violence, theft, anti-social behaviour, drugs crime and vandalism.

Mr MacLeod said: "The Subway has been working in partnership with BTP since January 2007.

"Their community-based, pro-active approach has proved most beneficial, offering reassurance to the travelling public and Subway staff."

During BTP's first full year of operation, the force recorded 81 crimes, with 43 (53%) of these cleared up.

There were 17 incidents of violent behaviour and BTP recorded eight incidents of theft, 40 cases of anti-social behaviour, four drugs offences, eight cases of vandalism and four other minor offences.

Mr MacLeod said: "The Glasgow Subway system is very safe. The chance that anyone will be a victim of crime on the Subway is very low.

"However, SPT will continue to strive to protect and reassure those who travel and work on the network.

"Staff vigilance, good working practices and partnership working remain key to achieving these goals.

"We must and will continue to work with our police partners, ensuring the best possible standards are achieved and surpassed."
