Dalmarnock Station

The redevelopment of Dalmarnock Station is a key project in the run-up to the 2014 Commonwealth games.

Plans are being advanced by SPT and our partners Glasgow City Council and Clyde Gateway for a major overhaul of this 'gateway to the Games' station.

The station is on the Argyle line with an excellent service frequency of four trains per hour westbound & eastbound to Glasgow - with a five minute journey time to city centre - and Motherwell, Hamilton and beyond.

It has a footfall of approximately 61,000, the majority of which is related to major events at Parkhead stadium.

At present, the station faces a number of challenges. These include no public facilities, poor awareness of station, poor accessibility (particularly with regards to disabilities) and safety concerns over the overall unpleasant station ambience and environment.

SPT has said for a long time that Dalmarnock station is a vital transport hub for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and essential to the continued regeneration of the east end. It lies next door to what will be the Athletes' Village in 2014 and is at the heart of Clyde Gateway's regeneration area.

Working with our partners, including Clyde Gateway, Glasgow City Council, Transport Scotland, a preferred design option has now been agreed.

The options ranged from a very basic station refurbishment (£5million approx) to a newly built prominent station building and upgrade of surrounding area (£9million approx).

SPT and all the other funding partners have opted for the latter, which will involve the demolition of the current station building, and the construction of a new, modern facility with a new entrance onto Dalmarnock Road all fully DDA compliant with passenger lifts.

Funding will consist of approximately £2million contributions each from SPT, Glasgow City Council and Clyde Gateway while a further £2.89million has been awarded from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) following a successful SPT-led bid. Transport Scotland will now take on the delivery of the project and are discussing arrangements with Network Rail for the detailed stage of work forward.

We believe a significantly upgraded station would deliver a fantastic transport legacy and it is envisaged that the new station will be in place by the end of 2013, in time for the Glasgow's Commonwealth Games.
